This hike is located along the Dorrien-Smith (dirt road) pass two dams. You can find parking at the Driftwood Day Use Area where many people park to go on the variety of hikes and scrambles within the area. You will notice a dry creek bed on the left as you drive toward Driftwood; you will need to walk 100-200 m back to this creek bed to begin your hike.

Begin your hike early in the day and you will notice significantly less water flow along the creek bed. This area was devastated by the 2013 floods that also decimated the entire Kananaskis Country and Canmore areas. This scramble requires route finding (and potential GPS) and smart decision making. Following this creek bed, you will come upon a series of cairns that can be used to help with your navigation. As you maneuver around the boulders and rocks, you will notice a fork in the road. The most obvious path would lead you to the left, but the easier route is to deviate towards the right route. You will come upon a steep rock slab that seems almost impossible to scale, but trust me... it is VERY VERY doable.. walk your way up the rock slab until it becomes too wet to do so then deviate to the right through an opening where it is just a minor incline all the way up to the summit on the left (opposite to Rim Wall).

*Later on in the day, the slabs may be wetter than earlier. This is not an issue as you can bush whack your way down beside the slabs and back down to the creek bed quite easily.

*The summit of the Orphan is slightly exposed so please be cautious.
